Compile the Linux kernel

Well, i’m on a debian box and  i have to upgrade my kernel, my actual version is 2.6.18 .
The debian repository suggests a kernel image version 2.6.26 and i can get it by a simple:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.26-1-686.
For more fun, we will try to get the latest version (2.6.28) of kernel and install it.

let’s start :
$ sudo apt-get install initramfs-tools ncftp
$ ncftp ftp://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/
ncftp/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6>get linux-2.6.28.tar.gz
$ tar xzvf linux-2.6.28.tar.gz
$ cd linux-2.6.28
$ cp /boot/config-2.6.18-6-686 .config
$ make menuconfig
$ make
$ sudo make modules_install install
$ cd /boot
$ update-grub
$ sudo mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28 2.6.28
$ sudo reboot
